Hey Mustangs, Are you up for the challenge? This year, I'm asking you to try something different. It's called the Read Without Walls Challenge. The criteria is pretty simple but you'll get so much out of it. All you have to do is: 1. Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you. 2. Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about. 3. Read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or a hybrid book. Not bad, right? By challenging yourself to read outside of your comfort zone, you'll be exploring the world through books. After you read a book with any of these elements, you can put your name and the name of the book on the bulletin board in the glass hallway. Join in on the fun and share your love of reading! Hey Mustangs! Did you know that you have the freedom to READ!? That's right! Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored. (source) But there are still people and groups who try to get certain books removed from schools and libraries. In response to this, libraries across the country celebrate Banned Books Week. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association. At Carusi, we celebrate our freedom to READ! Check out our display on some of the most frequently challenged books. This year's theme is celebrating diversity with books by authors of many backgrounds. Check one out and celebrate your FREEDOM. Hey Mustangs!
Guess what?! The new books are ready to be checked out and we have a lot of great stuff this year! We have more copies of some of the summer reading books including Uglies, The Crossover, Bomb, and Brown Girl Dreaming. If you read The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander, we have his new book called Booked. It's in the same poetic style as The Crossover but this time its all about soccer. If you liked Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, we also have Pretties which is the next in the series. If you are looking for something funny, check out I Even Funnier and I Totally Funniest both by James Patterson. If you like realistic fiction, look for All Shook Up by Shelley Pearsal, All American Girl by Meg Cabot or Better Off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg. We also have The Red Queen which is the first in a new series by Victoria Aveyard, The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle by Janet Fox, Blood on the River- Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone, and The Mad Mask by Barry Lyga. All of these new books will be out on display in the Media Center so be sure to come by! Remember, if the one you want is out, you can put it on hold! Just log in to the Destiny catalog and search for the book you want and click "hold it!" Or of course, just ask Ms. Wolozen for help! Hope to see you all in the library soon! Hey Mustangs!
Welcome to the new Media Center site and welcome back to school! I'm so excited for the start of the school year at Carusi and I hope you are too! I hope you completed your summer assignments, especially the summer reading! If you get a chance, check out my Instagram account @carusilms for information on some of the books that you could choose from. 7th and 8th graders, stop by to see me in September and I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of 6th graders at orientation night! It's going to be a great year in the Media Center and at Carusi! |
